The GSM standards based mobile industry has been enormously successful in one very specific way: getting devices with SIMs into peoples' hands. Up to now, the SIM has been the source of the identity of the phone: the way the network recognises a user. Movirtu has pioneered a way of separating the mobile identity from the SIM card, by keeping it securely in the telco cloud. This helps the more than one billion users who share mobile handsets or use public mobile retain individual mobile identities without the need for owning a phone or a SIM card.
While the roots of reinventing mobile identity were to serve the needs of the base of the pyramid shared mobile users, there are analogous needs in highly developed markets. Many users have multiple mobile identities due to the number of SIM cards in their devices. Movirtu's technology enables people to bundle these identities, separate information associated to these devices into other shapes (for instance, business and personal 'personas,'). We are able to make the enterprise IT manager's task easier by allowing identity separation on the same device between secure corporate environment and the individual's personal data and phone number. In addition, we can assign local identities to roaming customers, removing a huge pain point for operators and consumers alike.
