Mobile users in emerging markets continue to expand their use of the mobile phone. Phones are used to communicate with family and friends, but also access critical agricultural and health information. However, the 3bn people earning less than $2 a day do not own a phone and cannot regularly have access to these services.

MXInfo is a mobile network infrastructure platform which enables content providers, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and brands to provide personalised information services through the mobile operator to people living on less than $2 a day without the need for them to own their own mobile phone or SIM card. These services include healthcare, agriculture and educational information.

With MXInfo it is possible to have an active and a passive way of information gathering for the “Bottom of the Pyramid” mobile communication users. It enables NGO’s to provide personalised information via a simple menu structure which is accessed by an individual user name and password on any phone available.

The system supports a variety of different delivery methods including:

SMS – single shot delivery of information which can be then stored in a private message box.
Browser – using screen text menus pushed to the handset from the cloud users can browse through topics to find information. Content is stored in a carousel to ensure that it is constantly changing.
Database – users can look up real time market data such as crop prices.
Interactive – dynamic text menu applications enable rich and relevant content to be presented in an engaging conversation between the user and content provider or NGO.
Voice – information can be delivered using voice clips.

MXInfo also supports the publication of information generated by users:

Survey
– NGOs and welfare organisations can collect personal data from users in confidence.

Bulletin Board – users can enter their own snippets of local information and post onto public bulletin boards, and through the use of tagging users can search specific local information.
