Business Call to Action to provide low cost mobile services to three million poor

By Dennis Kabatto

If Business Call to Action (BCtA) has its way, 50 million poor people in Africa and South Asia, mostly women in rural areas will gain access to mobile phone services through low cost mobile phone identities and mobile numbers but no phones will be provided.

BCtA said the plan became closer to reality Thursday, after Movirtu, a United Kingdom based technology firm, made a commitment to help 3 million people use the technology on a regular basis.

Movirtu said it will offer numbers or mobile identities, through commercial carriers in developing countries in Africa and South Asia to people who typically borrow phones from others. With the mobile identities they will be able to log into the carrier's network and use their own prepaid minutes and bits of data to make and receive individual calls and access critical information and services such as banking or agriculture support.
