Movirtu offers multiple mobile identities on a single handset

By Iain Thomson

Movirtu, a company that specialises in bringing SIM-free shared phones to the developing world, is now translating the system to modern enterprises to manage mobile identities over the cloud.

The firm currently uses an adaptation of basic software built into all GSM phones to enable multiple people to use a single handset.

The user inputs a code and their personal number to bill calls to their account, without needing to own a SIM card to transfer identity.

The idea was conceived by British founder Nigel Waller on a flight to Moscow. He devised an adaptation of the GSM Unstructured Supplementary Service Data protocol, and has used it to set up shared phone services in developing countries, winning a contract with Airtel Madagascar in February.
